Continued as the Western Monthly Magazine (1833-37)
One of the most interesting magazine files of a pioneer region is that of the Illinois Monthly Magazine and its continuation, the Western Monthly Magazine. The founder, editor, and chief contributor was Judge James Hall. who wrote about two-thirds of the material. including some good indigenous western tales and sketches, some articles. fictional and otherwise, based on his naval experiences, and much information designed to attract settlers. The rest of the contents was made up of selected material and contributions by Morris Birkbeck. John M. Peck, Governor Edward Coles, and Dr. Asa Fitch. The serial "Notes on Illinois" was an important section of the magazine.
