THE CORSAIR. A Gazette of Literature, Art, Dramatic Criticism, Fashion and Novelty. v. 1; Mar. 16, 1839-Mar. 7, 1840. New York, 1839-40.
831 p. weekly.
N.P. Willis, T.O. Porter, editors.
Published by Nathaniel Parker Willis and his friend Dr. T.O. Porter, this weekly publication pirated its material from various sources, mainly European. Willis contributed some writings on art and drama, and then went to Europe, leaving Dr. Porter in charge, sending back Thackeray's travel letters as well as letters of his own, to stimulate the Corsair's failing fortunes. But despite good writing, the Corsair declined and ended publication in March of 1840.
