Edited by Rev- Thomas Brainerd, this semimonthly children's magazine was published under the patronage of the Cincinnati Sunday School Union. It was a religiously-oriented instructional magazine and although it claimed to offer "pleasant" stories, it actually published a large number of sober and morbid articles on the deaths of children, funerals, murders, etc. It also contained prayers, moralistic and instructive stories, news items, and articles on plants and animals and on the children, dress, and customs of foreign lands.
