Begun in Philadelphia as a monthly by James M. Campbell, this mainly eclectic magazine was sold after the first year to John Sartain, the engraver, who made it a semimonthly and furnished it with handsome mezzotint plates. Most of its material was selected from British periodicals, and included poetry, serialized tales, letters, essays, sketches, narratives, and articles on science and the arts.
