12/1/05 Announcement of the new “Talented Tenth” initiative

The Black Student Union (BSU) of Eureka College (IL) will be holding a press conference on Thursday, December 1, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. The press conference will be held in Moser Lobby of the Donald B. Cerf College Center on the Eureka College campus.

The purpose of the press conference is to announce publicly a new “talented tenth” initiative for the twenty-first century. For the past few months, a BSU committee has been at work revising the "Niagara Declaration of Principles" that W.E.B. DuBois issued in 1905 to make it a more contemporary statement of beliefs and goals. A copy of Dr. DuBois’s original “Declaration of Principles” can be found online at:

Later this week, copies of the revised "Declaration of Principles" will be sent to BSU chapters at colleges and universities across the United States in an effort to have a new generation of young leaders affirm and commit themselves to these goals. The ultimate goal is to revitalize DuBois's call for a "talented tenth" to emerge and lead the campaign for racial justice.
