Supersedes the Philadelphia Journal of the Medical and Physical Sciences.

This medical journal contained articles on medical jurisprudence, monographs on disease, medical news and cases, proceedings of medical societies, reviews, and some plates and woodcuts. Prominent physicians and professors were regular contributors. "The Periscope," which was devoted to a survey of developments in medicine at home and abroad, became an important department. The founding editor, Dr. Isaac Hays, held that position for 52 years, and was succeeded by his son, Dr. I. Minis Hays and others. In later years more foreign medical news was included. The file of early years provides a valuable resource for the study of the history of American medicine.
